who, me, teach?
I am starting to think that perhaps I rushed into my decision to go for smicha.

I am starting to think that, after all is said and done, I just want to TEACH. Like, teach English, teach French, teach the children of today who will become educated and literate and cultured, G-d willing, with a little help from me, a teacher.

Am I losing it? Or am I only now starting to see things more clearly? Gee bee.

feeling: : confused confused

Uhm.

I don't see how a smicha is a waste. Especially if you're learning lishma.

Plus, I'd get a kick out of calling you Rabbi Gordon.

But that's just me.

yes, but I'm also miserable, and I think part of the reason is that I want to be working, doing things, as in, now. Lots of people have told me that I can get my smicha over time, not to necessarily go full time but to learn while I am working, so that I don't spend the next four years learning and having no real parnassa and a-fricking-lone, etc. gee bee. I still would learn lishma, but while having a solid, stable parnassa.

Maybe it wouldn't be teaching. Maybe doing something in the computer field, or something like that. Believe it or not, despite the fact that I seem incompetent on the computer, I'm pretty good. Tee hee.

Oh!

Well, I like that idea, too.

Whatever makes you happy, dear.

not having long arguments with my mom in which she says that i am incapable of staying with anything for longer than six months and realizing that she is right but basically wanting to do something to support myself while the world realizes that i am an okay writer and worthy of at least one bestseller in this lifetime and possibly a multimillion dollar movie deal which would lead me to make a modern orthodox yeshiva for baalei teshuvot in manhattan, now that would make me happy.

that, and your being happy, makes me happy.

Well, I'm probably the world's worst advisor on things spiritual no matter what creed, but let me tell you, teaching is great. It has a lot to do with me still pursuing the PhD, and although I curse and moan about preparing my class a lot (well, I complain about almost everything I do, to be honest), I actually love talking and discussing literature in my class and sometimes see a glimmer of interest in those big undergrad eyes. I suppose it makes me feel as if I actually do something worthwhile (and worth the ridiculous amount of money I earn), a feeling you don't always have in the humanities.

oh, hermione, you know me well.

now have that twenty-four inches about the history of hippogriff beak shapes to me in the morning, or I will have to put someone in detention.

jeanrhys From: jeanrhys Date: le 22 juillet 2003 09:58 (UTC) (Lien)
hee hee, i wish my paper could speak for itself. i spent hours trying to imagine all the mean questions people might ask me.
gordond From: gordond Date: le 22 juillet 2003 09:59 (UTC) (Lien)
just imagine a stack of paper by a microphone talking about itself.
jeanrhys From: jeanrhys Date: le 22 juillet 2003 10:01 (UTC) (Lien)
my boss said the other day to a late comer in class: "there a three handouts wandering around". papers can do a lot of things, it seems.

Teaching is the most amazing thing a person can do. And Gd knows we need good 4th grade Rebbes out there.
I say go for it and no you are not soft. I was a first grade teacher to Israeli kids......if I can do it ANYONE can do it.
You rock I know you will do the right thing.
From: wickedsophie Date: le 22 juillet 2003 16:43 (UTC) (Lien)
Good luck in whatever you decide to do. I think, maybe you're starting to see things more clearly. From what very little I know of you, I think you'd be great with children. :)
gordond From: gordond Date: le 22 juillet 2003 19:48 (UTC) (Lien)
thank you ever much! but I might end up doing something else, or what not. but definitely not the rabbi thing.
