silly discussion
My brother and I were talking about guns the other day, and the dangers of having guns around. I brought up the point that butter knives are also lethal and every household has about a dozen or so. I posited that more people die from butter knife related injuries than gun related injuries on the basis that everyone has multiple butter knives, but only a small percent of people own a gun, let alone multiple guns to necessitate a gun rack. He did not want to discuss it any further.

What do you think? More gun deaths or more butter knife deaths, and why?

but only a small percent of people own a gun

Isn't it about a third of people in the USA?

I've heard the argument about banning swimming pools, in that more people drown in swimming pools than are killed by guns... (not sure if that's accidental deaths or not)

21.6 according to the National Opinion Research Center. Probably not entirely accurate but not entirely inaccurate either. That's a number I just found and is bigger than I thought it would be. Wow, that's scary. Even still, it is smaller than 99.9%. :)

if you really think about it, the home is one of the most dangerous places there is! You could fall down the stairs! Swallow too many aspirins! Stab yourself with a butcher knife! There's toxic chemicals all over the place, a fire constantly burning in your basement furnace...any number of things could go wrong. One need not own a gun to be in danger of accidental death.

Really? More people die from butter knives?

I would like to see that statistic. Knives in general I might buy, but it seriously takes some doing to cut or stab yourself or anyone else with a butter knife. I mean if you fell on a plastic one, it'd probably break before it entered your skin. You might somehow successfully stab yourself or even anyone else (who would probably kick your ass if you tried) with the metal variety, but that would also take some doing.

Because you said butter knives, I wouldn't buy it. If you said knives in general I might though.

The really sad statistic is the accidental child deaths from guns kept in the house.

Re: Really? More people die from butter knives?

That's just my hypothesis. Also, perhaps my definition of butter knife is too broad because I have some knives of the butter variety that are pretty darn sharp. :)

Re: Really? More people die from butter knives?

If your definition of butter knife is "just about any knife smaller than a claymore" then I can see that.

Probably most people when you say butter knife though would think of those knives slightly sharper than a spoon but barely sharp enough to actually cut bread.

And what hapepned to your bro? o_0
